Founded in the late 1890s and originally known as W Sellers and Sons, we are one of the longest established family funeral directors in the region. As a young man of 15, Maurice Sharp joined the Sellers family in 1951. He initially trained as a joiner however due to his mature and caring nature Maurice soon became an integral member of Sellers' funeral services.

In 1991, the Sellers family felt unable to continue in the funeral industry, and Maurice became the sole proprietor, continuing the tradition of running a small, family-owned and independent funeral home.

In 1994, following years of partnership, Maurice took over Layton and Sons of Market Weighton. In 2001, we bought and renovated 4 Church Side in Market Weighton. This is a respectful funeral home where final arrangements are made, and families can say goodbye to their loved ones.

In 1996, Maurice's daughter, Gill, entered the family business full time. Under her father's care and tutelage, Gill's hard work has made her a respected and trusted member of the Pocklington community.

In 2015, Maurice's grandson (Gill's son), Luke, joined the family business, the third generation to do so. Luke has obtained a number of certified qualifications to allow G M Sharp to remain at the forefront of modern funeral directing practices.

In 2018, we acquired new premises in the market town of Driffield. Until that point, Driffield was a town served by multinational funeral providers. However, we believed that our different way of operating and personal, family touch would be a great fit here. Our policy of quality service at a fair price alongside a staff base of well-trained locals has been seen as a positive step forward (both in terms of competition in the town and upholding the traditional values of a market town).

We have come a long way since the early days of the funeral service industry, but we have never forgotten the simple principles of care and dignity that are at the heart of what we do. To complement our ultra-professional staff and specialist funeral homes, we take great pride in constantly re-investing and ensuring every aspect of our service is delivered with the highest professionalism and using industry-specialized equipment.
