As a family run, independent company, we are here 24hours a day, 7 days a week to offer support, guidance and help to those in a time of need. We aim to meet the needs of all our clients, offering every type of service available, in the most dignified way, at a price that is fair and honest.

It is a rare privilege to be a funeral director, to stand in a sensitive position at a crucial time in the midst of a bereaved family, knowing that the quality of our service will help that family through one of the most difficult times in their lives.

G M Sharp, independent family funeral services offer a personal and dignified service in Pocklington, Driffield and Market Weighton, while also covering the areas of York, Stamford Bridge, Dunnington, Beverly, Holme Upon Spalding Moor, and all surrounding villages. As this is a family run business we can easily provide such a service without the larger business constraints that other multi-national funeral corporations work with. We are well known for our compassionate and personal attitude employing highly trained funeral directors including arguably the most experienced and trusted lady funeral director in York.

We pride ourselves in the care and attention we provide to families going through a difficult time. These values have been passed down to a second and third generation of our family. Our aim is to offer bereaved families a truly personal service tailored to their individual needs, and this is why we don’t work set hours or days, we want to be there to help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Our long standing establishment within the local community brings a great sense of pride to everyone involved in Maurice Sharp Funeral Directors. This is why generations of families have come to trust in our professional service that we can give their loved ones in our funeral homes.

Our Code of Practice

The Code of Practice sets out the high standard of service that bereaved families may expect in their dealings with a member of the National Association of Funeral Directors, including key requirements in respect of the funeral director’s professional conduct. It also deals with advertising and marketing, price information, estimates, final accounts and publicity.

Funeral Director Members of the Association are bound by this robust Code of Practice – the terms of which incorporate twelve key principles – and is strictly monitored by a team of Standards and Quality Managers to ensure compliance.

Established in the late 1890’s and originally known as W Sellers and Sons, G M Sharp is one of the longest established family funeral directors in the region. Maurice Sharp joined the Sellers family as a young man of 15 in 1951. As a mature and caring individual, Maurice soon became an integrated member of Sellers funeral services. In 1991 the Seller family were no longer able to progress W Sellers and Sons, and the opportunity arose for Maurice to become the sole proprietor, continuing the tradition of running a small, family owned, independent funeral director.

In 1994, following years of partnership, Maurice took over Layton and Sons of Market Weighton. In 2001 we renovated 4 church side, Market Weighton, enabling the provision of a private chapel of rest. This is a respectful funeral home where final arrangements can be made and families are able to say goodbye to their loved ones.

In 1996 Maurice’s daughter, Gill, joined him in running Sharp funeral services. Under the care and tutelage of her father, accompanied by hard work, Gill has become a well-liked and trusted member of the Pocklington communitie. In the year 2000, the decision was took to hand both funeral directors over to Gill, with Maurice pursuing a consultancy role. Today Gill and her husband Stephen, oversee every aspect of all funeral arrangements.

In 2015 Gill and Steve’s son Luke joined the family business. Luke has become the 3rdgeneration of Maurice’s family to uphold the traditional values of the local funeral director. Recently Luke has completed studying a number of NAFD certified qualifications in order to allow GM Sharp to remain at the forefront of modern funeral directing practices. As a result of a new member of our family being integrated into the business, in 2018 we have acquired new premises in the market town of Driffield. For many years we have contemplated the idea of opening a branch in Driffield but wanted to build our foundations as a company before making any such move. As the only current independently owned and run funeral service branch serving Driffield we believe that our policies of a quality service at a fair price and a staff base of well-trained locals will be seen as a positive step forward both in terms of competition in the town and upholding the traditional values of a market town. Major refurbishment is leading to us creating a bespoke establishment in Driffield town which we hope, in time, will become an integral part of the capital of the Wolds.

We have come a long way since the early days of the funeral service industry, however we never forget the simple principles of care and dignity that are at the heart of what we do. To complement our ultra-professional staff and specalist funeral homes we take great pride in constantly re-investing. Ensuring that every aspect of our service is conducted at paramount professionalism using industry specialised equipment.
